Over a dozen people become ill as a result of contaminated pet food

Posted on Wednesday, May 9th, 2012 at 4:45 pm

A nationwide recall of pet food has been announced after 14 people became ill from having contact with the sick dogs.

According to officials with the Center of Disease Control, an investigation into Diamond Pet Foods is underway in order to determine if this is where the salmonella contamination began.

It is thought at this time that the dog food was manufactured at a plant in South Carolina, but the illnesses have come from nine different states. It is possible that the people got sick when handling dogs that ate the contaminated food. The recall affects multiple different types of dog food.

Pfizer recalls birth control, risk of unintended pregnancy

Posted on Thursday, February 2nd, 2012 at 5:56 pm

Earlier this week, Pfizer Inc., the world’s largest pharmaceutical manufacturer, issued a recall of 1 million packs of oral contraceptives, or birth control.

The company reported that a manufacturing error caused some of the 28-pill birth control packs to be packaged with the incorrect ratio of hormone pills to sugar pills, which could put some women at risk of unintended pregnancy.

The recalled birth control packs are Lo/Ovral-28 and its generic form, Norgestrel and Ethinyl Estradoil.  These drugs are intended to have 21 hormone pills and 7 sugar pills.  When they are not taken in the correct order or amount, the pills’ effectiveness at preventing pregnancy is significantly reduced.

Women taking these medications should talk to their doctor about their risks and about using a different contraceptive immediately.

Ford recalls more than 500,000 vehicles

Posted on Friday, January 13th, 2012 at 5:12 pm

Ford Motor Co. announced this week that it will be recalling 2001-2002 Ford Escape SUVs, 2004-2005 Ford Freestar minivans, and 2004-2005 Mercury Monterey minivans.

Nearly 300,000 Ford Escapes are being recalled for a potential fire hazard that can occur when the brake fluid leaks onto the ABS module electrical connector. Ford received 86 reports of fires after the Escapes had been recalled previously in 2007. The automaker now says that the vehicles may not have been properly inspected and repaired. All 2001-2002 Escape owners are strongly encouraged not to park their cars in the garage.

More than 250,000 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans are being recalled for possible loss of forward and reverse power. Two accidents have been reported in relation to the recall, one that resulted in minor injuries.
